WILDCRAFTED GOLDEN SEA MOSS

DID YOU KNOW?

"Golden sea moss" is a term used to describe a variety of sea moss that has been sun-bleached to give it that lighter, golden color. The process of sun-bleaching sea moss is a traditional method that has been used for generations in the Caribbean.

  • SEA MOSS HARVESTING

Sea moss can be harvested in several ways in the Caribbean, depending on the resources available. Diving Wildcrafted sea moss and hand harvesting are traditional methods of sea moss harvesting, sea vegetable divers manually collect the sea moss from the sea bed. This method involves diving into the sea, locating the sea moss beds, and carefully pulling out the seaweed from the rocks. Aquaculture is another technique used to cultivate sea moss in controlled environments. This method involves growing the seaweed in open coastal waters, and then harvesting it when it reaches maturity.

  • SEA MOSS SWEATING

The process of sun-bleaching sea moss is a traditional method that has been used for generations in the Caribbean.

To sun-bleach sea moss, the freshly harvested seaweed is washed to remove any sand, debris, or salt. The seaweed is then laid out on large sheets or trays, which are placed in direct sunlight. The sun's rays help to dry out the seaweed and gradually lighten its color. During the sun-bleaching process, the seaweed is regularly turned and stirred to ensure that all parts of the seaweed receive an equal amount of sunlight. This helps to prevent uneven bleaching and ensure that the seaweed dries evenly.

  • SEA MOSS DRYING

After the sun-bleaching process, sea moss is typically sun-dried in the Caribbean to preserve it and remove any remaining moisture. The process of sun-drying sea moss is similar to the sun-bleaching process, but it involves laying the seaweed out in the sun until it is completely dry. The seaweed is then spread out in a thin layer on large sheets or trays, which are placed in a sunny, outdoor location. The seaweed is turned and stirred regularly to ensure that it dries evenly. The drying process can take several days, depending on the weather conditions and the thickness of the seaweed.

  • SEA MOSS BY COASTAL AQUACULTURE

Coastal sea moss aquaculture involves cultivating the seaweed in its natural habitat along the coast, typically on rocks or other hard surfaces. Traditionally, lines are anchored into the sand and plastic bottles are used as floats to keep the sea moss growing lines close enough to the water line where it absorbs the sun, today many sea moss farmers are aborting the use of plastic bottles and are looking towards the use of other sustainable sea moss cultivation methods, like bamboo. Coastal sea moss farms are located along the shoreline, where the seaweed can grow in its natural environment, which means that it is subject to the conditions of the ocean, including changes in water quality, temperature, and nutrient levels. When the sea weed is ready it is typically harvested by hand, using a sharp knife or scissors to cut the seaweed close to the base. Harvesting may be more difficult in coastal areas due to the rougher terrain and stronger ocean currents, making the harvesting just as labor intensive as it would when dived.

  • SEA MOSS BY POOL GROWN FARMING

Pool-grown sea moss farming on the other hand has been introduced in other parts of the world, where abundant open coastal waters may not be accessible. With Pool-grown sea moss farming, this involves cultivating the seaweed in shallow tanks or pools that are filled with filtered seawater and sea salt. Pool-grown sea moss farms are typically located indoors and out of the natural environment or the sun. The seaweed is grown in a controlled environment, which allows farmers to regulate factors such as water quality, temperature, and nutrient levels. Pool-grown sea moss farming overall, is used in other places in the world to allow for a more controlled and predictable growing environment, however, there have been many drawbacks in this sea moss cultivation process, because the sea moss is taken away from its natural environment, a constant supply of filtered water is needed for growth, in addition, chemicals and anti-pollutants are added to the water which can eventually affect the human body and disqualifies the sea moss from being wildcrafted and organically cultivated.
