Where you vacation is where we live? Warm sunny island, pristine waters,unspoilt land. To most locals, however, opportunities are limited, the sweet sound of birds are often unheard each morning as the alarm clock reminds them of a new day, to hustle, to try to make ends meet.
Crickets continue to sing a new song, but racing thoughts of survival are too loud for them to enjoy the symphony. Monday to Friday for some, Sunday to Sunday for many, no time to enjoy the distant sound of the waves, rivers or a waterfalls, that brings you peace. A High population of single mothers are busy worrying about feeding their children, men and fathers are out in the field, their bodies aching from labor, but still, not enough to upgrade their lives or provide their families the life they envision. Our children continue to excel at schools, rising up among us, is a young educated population who will soon find out that there are no jobs available for them and having degrees do not guarentee them a seat at the table.
Slow and Steady is Everything, but fast and immediate is the change they crave. It's very different, than what you are used to, when you get here, you never want to leave! But to a local thoughts of escaping the island is all they ever think about! The cost of bills, food, and shelter far exceeds wages, local businesses lack the necessary machinery and technology needed to compete on the international market, and there are limited access to funding or financial aid to even get started. Big Ideas are a distant dream, our warm and friendly people are accepting of their fate, “I am grateful to be alive” becomes their mantra to mentally cope with the hand that has dealt.
